Homes in Mount Prospect
Mount Prospect is a village of about fifty-seven thousand people with a walkable downtown around its Union Pacific Northwest Metra station, roughly twenty miles out from Ogilvie. The 1930 depot still anchors the Busse Triangle, and Randhurst Village on Rand Road is the open-air center that replaced the mall of the same name. It is worth saying plainly that Mount Prospect and Prospect Heights are two different places, because the names do most of the confusing on their own.
This is the postwar town among the places we clean, and the figures are stark. The median house was built in 1969, only about three percent of the village predates 1940, and more than eighty percent of everything here went up between 1940 and 1989. Mount Prospect is not an old town with new edges; it was built essentially all at once. The standard house is a three-bedroom ranch, split-level or Cape Cod on a quarter-acre lot, and there is a substantial share of townhouses and condominiums alongside the detached houses.
That geometry has its own shape. A split-level is carried between half-flights rather than rolled, because nothing wheels between levels. A ranch is all on one floor and is often quicker than its room count suggests. An attached home brings building rules, a service entrance and sometimes a lift, all worth naming in the request. The water is Lake Michigan water treated by the City of Chicago, so there are no private wells: what you get is ordinary calcium film and soap scum on glass, chrome and tile, which is a wipe-down problem rather than a chemistry problem.
