Homes in Oak Brook
Oak Brook shares a border with Hinsdale and almost nothing else. Where Hinsdale is a Victorian railroad village, Oak Brook is a planned twentieth-century one: not incorporated until 1958, built out from the mid-1960s, with no Metra station, no traditional downtown and essentially no prewar housing. Oakbrook Center, which opened in 1962, is one of the largest shopping centers in the country. Graue Mill on York Road, a water-powered gristmill built in 1852 and a documented stop on the Underground Railroad, is the one genuinely old thing in the village.
The housing peaks hard in the 1970s and 1980s and the median house dates to about 1979. Three layers sit on top of one another. The 1960s subdivisions such as Ginger Creek, Brook Forest and Timber Trails are long ranches and split-levels on wooded, winding streets, and they are now the oldest houses in town. Above those are the 1970s and 1980s custom estate subdivisions on half-acre to one-acre lots, including the gated ones, where houses commonly run several thousand square feet and well beyond.
The build era decides the surfaces. An Oak Brook house of this vintage is drywall and forced air, not plaster and radiators, so expect wall-to-wall carpet in the ones that have not been rebuilt, sunken rooms, wet bars and stone fireplaces, and a fully renovated interior in many of the rest. Square footage, not room count, is what actually drives the time. The village buys Lake Michigan water through the DuPage Water Commission and its hardness runs low, so glass, chrome and glassware behave very differently here from a house on an untreated well.
With houses this size the square-footage band is the field that matters most, and it is worth answering honestly rather than low. Enter 60523 and your rooms and the price appears before you give us your name. If the property is in a gated community, put the gate code and the name the guard will ask for in the request notes.
