Every cleaning company sells both and few of them explain the difference, which leaves homeowners to guess whether they are being upsold. They usually are not. The two jobs are different work, done in a different order, and take different amounts of time.
The short version
A standard cleaning keeps a house at the level it is already at. A deep cleaning moves it to a higher level so that a standard cleaning can hold it there. If a house has not been professionally cleaned in six months, a standard cleaning will not reach the standard you are imagining, because the time is spent on surfaces rather than on the build-up underneath them.
What a standard cleaning covers
Floors vacuumed and mopped throughout. Kitchen counters, the outside of the appliances, the sink and the cooktop. Bathrooms scrubbed: tub or shower, toilet, vanity, mirror, tile. Flat surfaces dusted, beds made, mirrors and interior glass on the doors, trash out. It is the whole house, every visit, at a level a household can live with between visits.
What it does not include is anything that needs moving, soaking or an extension pole: behind the appliances, inside them, the top of a tall cabinet, the ledge of a two-story foyer.
What a deep cleaning adds
Baseboards, door frames and doors by hand. Window sills and interior sills. Light fixtures and ceiling fans, which in a home with high ceilings is a pole job rather than a cloth job. Cabinet fronts, including the grease film above a range. Behind and underneath what can safely be moved. Tile and grout worked rather than wiped. Vents and switch plates.
The order is different too. A deep clean works top down and leaves the floors for last, because everything dislodged from a ceiling fan lands on them.
Why the first visit is usually a deep clean
A recurring price is built on a house that starts clean. If the first visit is charged and worked as a standard clean, one of two things happens: the crew runs out of time and the house is not right, or the crew stays until it is and the visit costs more than it was sold for. Pricing the first visit as a deep clean is the honest version of that arithmetic, and it is what the calculator on this site does.
From the second visit onward the recurring rate applies, because there is now a baseline to maintain.
How long each one takes
A deep clean of the same house takes considerably longer than a standard clean of it, and in one of the five-bedroom South Barrington houses it can be most of a working day. That matters for planning more than for price: it decides whether you need to be out of the house, which rooms the crew starts in, and whether one arrival window is enough.
Which one you need
Book a deep clean if it has been six months or more, if you are starting recurring service, if you have just finished a renovation or a project that put dust through the house, or if you are handing the house to somebody else. Book a standard clean if the house was professionally cleaned recently and has simply been lived in since.
